Orthotic Shells

The shell of a foot orthotic is the functional part of the device. It typically cups the heel and extends forward to just behind the ball of the foot, or metatarsal heads, supporting the arches of the foot. Custom orthotics often include heel posts to further control pronation and supination as well as padded covers to add comfort, or accommodate for particular ailments such as bunions, calluses, corns, neuropathy and wounds. However, the essence of the benefit from these devices comes from the orthotic shell. Improper footwear, especially when worn for long periods in stressful conditions can actually cause damage to the bone structures, ligaments and muscles of the feet, resulting in the need for a corrective orthotic insole. The word "orthotic" implies some type of brace. An orthotic insole is a shoe insert with a strong supportive shell. While walking and running, the entire weight of your body is transferred through the bones, ligaments and muscles of the feet and ankles. Repetitive incorrect alignment can cause long term damage and supportive orthotics can help prevent said damage. The orthotic shell encourages the correct alignment of the bones, ligaments and muscles of the feet during the gait cycle so the forces of walking and running are transferred effectively through the structures of the lower extremity. Finding the correct orthotic for you requires considering a variety of factors. What is your shoe size and weight? What types of activities are you participating in? What types of shoes will this device be required to fit and function within? KLM has insoles especially designed for everything from high heels and boots, to diabetic tennis shoes.
